Sunny Deol and Anil Sharma made history with their collaboration on Gadar: Ek Prem Katha two decades ago, and the film shattered several records to become the highest-grossing film of all time. The action-packed movie, set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pak partition, holds and will continue to hold the record for the most box office receipts in a single millennium. Sunny Deol, Anil Sharma, Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma chose to continue the story with Gadar 2 22 years after the unprecedented success of the original film.
As expected, the film was a smashing success when it debuted in theatres over the 2023 Independence Day weekend. Despite drawbacks including low ticket sales and scheduling conflicts with OMG 2, underdog Gadar 2 smashed all previous records. Additionally, the Gadar sequel broke the record for the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Pathaan. As per the latest reports by Pinkvilla, Zee Studios has officially approved Gadar 3. They have completed the initial paperwork, according to reports.
According to the entertainment portal, Anil and his writing team have been working on Gadar 3 ever since the Gadar 2 premiere, and they've decided on a basic plot for the third installment. A source close to the development revealed that the idea came from a conversation between Anil and his writing partner, Shaktimaan. The source revealed that this installment, like the franchise, will be set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pak conflict, but with even higher stakes.
According to the source, all of the partners are enthusiastic about the idea and ready to embark on the voyage on Gadar 3. The insider told the publication that quite a bit of writing will take place to flesh out the concept, but the crew has a good idea of where Tara Singh, Sakina, and Jeete's story is going from here on out. Assuming all goes according to plan, Gadar 3 could launch by the year 2025's end.
Inquiring about the latest news, Anil confirmed that Tara Singh will be back, as they have locked in the basic idea of Gadar 3. He added that his next directorial, Journey, stars Utkarsh and Nana Patekar, and he will shortly begin writing the screenplay for Gadar 3.
Sunny, in the meantime, will begin filming Lahore: 1947 in February, is currently in negotiations to film Ramayana as Lord Hanuman, and will thereafter film Border 2, the sequel to his 1997 hit.
