Science fiction is one genre that is not attempted much in Malayalam cinema earlier. Recently though, movies like Nine, Churuli and Red Rain emerged as notable releases in the genre. Now, the trailer of Gaganachari is launched with the promise of a sci-fi fantasy film in Malayalam. The trailer provides a new experience for the Malayalam audience, as it deals with themes like aliens and dark matter.

The film is set in 2043, against a dystopian backdrop. Characterised by a post-apocalyptic timeline, the trailer has elements of science fiction and dark humour. The upcoming film features Gokul Suresh, Anarkali Marikar, Ganesh Kumar and Aju Varghese in lead roles.

Earlier in an interview with OTTplay, Anarkali admitted that she plays the role of an alien in this movie, which no one attempted before in Mollywood. The actress was recently seen alongside Lukman Avaran in Ashraf Hamza’s Sulaikha Manzil.

Gaganachari has already bagged many international awards before its release. It won the ‘Best Film’ title at the Art Blocks International Film Festival in Copenhagen, while it has also garnered recognition from nine other international film festivals, including several esteemed ones in New York and London.

After Saajan Bakery and Sayanna Varthakal, Arun Chandu is directing Gaganachari. He has co-written the script of the film with Siva Sai, an associate of director Priyadarshan. According to the director, the entire film has been crafted in the style of a mockumentary, similar to popular shows like The Office and What We Do in the Shadows, making it the first Indian sci-fi movie to adopt this filmmaking approach.

Prashant Pillai is composing the tracks after working in films like Anuraga Karikkin Vellam and Jallikattu. Phoenix Prabhu, who is famous for his riveting action sequences in Kala, is the action director of this movie. It boasts art direction by M Baava, editing by Arvind Manmadan and cinematography by Surjit SP

Parts of it are also shot in locations including Ernakulam, Dhanushkodi and Bengaluru

Meanwhile, Gokul is also playing a lead role in Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha. The film also features the directorial debut of Abhilash Joshi, son of renowned filmmaker Joshiy.
