On February 7, Kannada actor Rajavardan will have his third release as a leading man, Gajarama in theatres, after nearly 5 years in the industry. Rajavardan is the son of veteran actor Dingri Nagaraj, but that filmi connect has not been of much use to him, he reckons. “Just because you are an actor’s son, you do not get a red-carpet welcome into the industry. It’s a visiting card at best that opens a few doors initially, but after that, you are on your own and the only thing that will sustain you is your talent,” says the actor, in conversation with Prajaa TV Kannada.

Rajavardan says that audience perspective is that those with a film background have it easy in the industry. But that could not be further from the truth, he says, citing examples like Vinnod Prabhakar, Tharun Kishore Sudhir, or, for that matter, even Darshan Thoogudeepa. Each one of them, he says, has had a fair share of struggle before finding their footing in the Kannada film industry and found acceptance only after audiences were convinced of their potential.

Rajavardan: Kannada cinema lacks good writers and filmmakers

The actor adds that a lack of good writers and filmmakers is also a major reason for people like him are making slow progress in their careers. It has gotten a lot better in the last 4-5 years, he reckons, but it’s still slow compared to other neighbouring industries.

Rajavardan also addressed why he chose to debut with a historical – Bicchugatthi – stating that if he’d done a romantic drama or an out-and-out commercial film, he’d have been 1 in a hundred. In doing a historical, a genre that is rarely attempted, he got a lot more recognition. Since then, though, the actor has been sticking to the commercial film format.

Gajarama has the actor playing a wrestler, a role that demanded a physical transformation, in terms of building muscle tone on his shoulders and legs, etc., as well as practising professional wrestling in a mud ring.
