After eight seasons of wowing viewers with its impeccable story, HBO’s Game of Thrones certainly left fans with a bad aftertaste with its disappointing final season. But there's one person who seems to have seen it coming, none other than George RR Martin on whose works the fantasy series was based.

According to excerpts from entertainment author James Andrew’s book Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, Martin’s representative revealed how the author was ‘worried’ about how the show’s story was progressing after season five. Although the first five seasons had followed Martin’s vision for the story, the plot started deviating from it in its sixth season.

Martin had also mentioned that he had not told a soul about who would be the final ruler of the prestigious Iron Throne. The show’s creators had however stated that Martin had told them that Bran Stark would be the one to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

The author was however pleased with the show’s finale, in stark contrast to public opinion. He also praised the performance of actress Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, appreciating how she tackled the ‘difficult’ role.

The series, created by David Benioff and DB Weiss, is based on Martin’s book series titled A Song of Ice and Fire. The series depicts the power struggles between several noble families for establishing themselves as the rule of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, in the face of grave threats.

The series stars Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams among others.

Game of Thrones can be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.
