Days after Abhishek Bachchan revealed that his next project will reunite him with director R Balki, the filmmaker has finally opened up about the upcoming project. Titled Ghoomer, the film is touted to be a sports drama and is inspired by the incredible true story of Olympic Gold medallist, Károly Takács.
Takács was a Hungarian shooter who had a physical disability, brought about by an injury to his left hand. But despite it, he went on to become an expert right-handed shooter, winning two Olympic Gold Medals in the sport. In a statement, the film’s makers revealed that the film is not biographical but focuses on the achievements of disabled sportspersons.
Balki also talked about the several reasons he was excited to make the film as well, which included being able to work with the film’s stars, Bachchan, Saiyami Kher and Shabana Azmi. The filmmaker expressed his excitement at being able to collaborate with Bachchan yet again, after Paa (2009), calling him one of the few actors in contemporary cinema who have the ‘depth’, possessed by stars of a more traditional era.
He talked about his enthusiasm for getting to work with Azmi for the first time and Kher as well, calling the latter a talented actor as well as sportsperson. The filmmaker also added that the upcoming film gives a new idea to a traditional sport, and likened it to spinning the sport on its head.
The upcoming sports drama also features Angad Bedi, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and Ivanka Das. Produced under the banners of Hope Productions and Saraswati Entertainment, Ghoomer’s script is written by Balki along with Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani.
