The upcoming film Gilky will be a very different film for Kannada audiences. Gilky is about a differently-abled couple, played by Tarak Ponnappa and Chaitra J Achar and sees the world from their perspective. Tarak plays an intellectually-challenged character, while Chaitra is in a wheelchair owing to cerebral palsy. There is a third character, played by Gowtham, who is visually challenged. Directed by YK, who has been quoted as saying that his film is an attempt at telling an unusual and new story as a commercial film, but without the tropes associated with it. The filmmaker has said that Gilky has a lot of emotion, love, and other elements that commercial audiences like, but these have been presented in an experimental manner. “My characters hope to show audiences a new world they have created within the four walls they inhabit,” he had said.
The film, produced by Narasimha Kulkarni, is now coming to theatres. Today, the team announced that Gilky will release on February 18. “Block you dates on Feb 18. A masterpiece directed by YK and produced by Narasimha Kulkarni will be in your nearest multiplexes and theatres. Need all your support and blessings,” Tarak had posted on social media, along with a poster detailing the first list of theatres that the film will be at.
Gilky is the fifth film to announce a February release in recent times. While Love Mocktail 2 leads the pack on February 11, followed by Gilky on the 18th, Ek Love Ya on the 24th and Old Monk and Bytwo Love on the 25th. With the major Telugu releases, which tend to take up a bulk of the movie halls in Karnataka, slated for March and April, and Kiccha Sudeep’s Vikrant Rona also pushed ahead, Kannada filmmakers are planning to bring their films to theatres, even though there is still no clarity on allowing 100% occupancy in theatres.
