On February 18, a rather unique love story will unfold on the big screen when director YK’s film, Gilky, com es to theatres. The film unfolds from the perspective of three characters, Shakti/Gilky (Tarak Ponnappa), Nancy (Chaitra J Achar) and Shakespeare (Gowtham), all of who are differently abled. While Gilky is intellectually-challenged, Nancy has cerebral palsy and Shakespeare is visually-challenged. The trailer of the film was released today and gives audiences a glimpse into the world of the three characters.
Speaking about why he took up the role, Tarak tells us, “When director YK narrated the story to me, I was thrilled, because it was a dark comedy with romance at its centre. The love between Gilky and Nancy is quite heart-touching. Society tends to push individuals who are differently-abled to the sidelines. So, when these three characters, Gilky, Nancy and Shakespeare form their own world of fantasy and start enjoying it, the love that blossoms between Gilky and Nancy becomes a bone of contention. How they overcome it forms the main plot of the story and when I heard it, as an actor, I was excited because I’ve always wanted to try different roles, especially because my looks, which often get me stereotyped as a commercial film hero. I wanted to break that image with Gilky.”
YK, meanwhile, has been quoted as saying that his film is an attempt at telling an unusual and new story as a commercial film, but without the tropes associated with it. The filmmaker has said that Gilky has a lot of emotion, love, and other elements that commercial audiences like, but these have been presented in an experimental manner.
The film, produced by Narasimha Kulkarni, is headed into heavy competition at the box office, with Dhanveerrah’s Bytwo Love and Vinnod Prabhakar’s Varada and Bhavachitra, among others.
