Director Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, starring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, among others, released world-wide on November 15, 2024 and was on OTT, albeit on transactional video on demand (rental-only), merely 45 days later.
The film, which had opened to middling reviews, was available in India on Amazon Prime Video for Rs 389 from January 1, and the streamer has now confirmed a date from which Gladiator II will be available for free to subscribers. According to the platform’s most recent blog post, Gladiator II will begin streaming on March 12, 2025.
TITLE | Gladiator II |

The plot of Gladiator II picks up 16 years after the events of the first film, focusing on Lucius (Mescal), the son of Maximus (Russell Crowe) and Lucilla (Nielsen), who is now a gladiator forced to fight in the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors Geta and Caracalla, played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger, respectively. As a prisoner of war, Lucius becomes a gladiator and is trained by Macrinus (Washington), a former slave, who has been plotting to overthrow Geta and Caracalla.
Gladiator II raked in $435.2 million at the global box office, a figure that fell way short of the US$700 million it needed to break even. It also drew a blank during the award season, despite nominations at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Produced by Ridley Scott, Michael Pruss, Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher and David Franzoni, the film was written by Peter Craig and David Scarpa.
Although production on Gladiator II began only June 2023, plans for a sequel that would centre on Lucius and his search for the truth about his biological father began as early as 2001, a year after the original film came out. Back then, the makers even considered bringing Crowe back to reprise his role as Maximus, even though the character had died in Gladiator.
