Malayalam cinephiles had a lot to look forward to with Gold’s release. Apart from the film being Alphonse Puthren’s first directorial in almost seven years after Premam, the film’s star cast and intriguing premise certainly did a great job at stoking fans’ excitement. So it was no surprise that fans flocked to theatres to catch the film in all its glory on the big screen when Gold hit the silver screen on Thursday. But it seems that for some, the film failed to live up to their expectations.

A number of netizens were impressed by the film. Some of the things which impressed viewers were the film’s cinematography and background score. Many also agreed that the performances by the lead cast were wonderful.

The people who liked the film appreciated Alphonse Puthren for delivering an entertaining film. “It's a fun ride by #AlphonsePuthren! Quality Making,BGM and Great Performances!” wrote one user.

But there were many that the film failed to impress. Some viewers labelled the film ‘average’, and criticised the length of the film as well. Some users were of the view that Nayanthara’s talents were ‘wasted’ in the film, and that the director failed to make good use of the star cast. “#GoldMovie didn't met the Expectations. Small plot extended into big movie & tried to save it with Editing Gimmicks, didn't actually used the star cast associated with the movie. One time Watchable(sic)”, wrote one user.

In addition to Prithviraj and Nayanthara, the film also features Roshan Mathew, Jaffer Idukki, Shammi Thilakan, Ajmal Ameer, Lalu Alex, Deepti Sati, Saiju Kurup, Chemban Vinod Jose, Shanthi Krishna, Jagadeesh, Prem Kumar and Vinay Forrt in pivotal roles. The review for the film on OTTplay reads “The highlight of Gold, right from its outset, is its making; Alphonse has carefully conceived and crafted each of the scenes of the film that blends with Rajesh Murugesan’s thumping music”.

Gold is now showing in theatres.
