Golden Globes 2023: RRR loses out to Argentina, 1985, in the Best Motion Picture—Non-English Language category

The historical epic RRR directed by SS Rajamouli failed to take home the Golden Globe for best non-English language film. It was up against All Quiet on the Western Front by Germany, Argentina's Argentina, 1985 (which won), Close by (Belgium), and Decision to Leave (South Korea). For Naatu Naatu, RRR previously took home the Best Original Song award.

Argentina, 1985 is a historical drama film from Argentina that was produced, directed, and written by Santiago Mitre and Mariano Llinás. Ricardo Darín, Peter Lanzani, Alejandra Flechner, and Norman Briski are the film's main actors.

The story, which is based on actual events, follows the events leading up to the 1985 Trial of the Juntas, which brought to justice the perpetrators of Argentina's final civil-military dictatorship (1976–1983). It focuses on the brave work of a group of lawyers led by prosecutors Julio César Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo to bring those responsible for the bloodiest dictatorship in the country to justice. Under the banner "Nunca Más" ("Never Again"), the story reflects on the true meaning of the principles of memory, truth, and justice.

The Golden Globes are a significant Oscar forerunner. After a one-year hiatus, the event was finally broadcast. At that time, most people in the industry didn't go to the event because of serious claims about diversity behind the scenes and a lack of openness in the selection process. The 80th Golden Globe Awards were hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, and many famous people from the entertainment business were there.

Rajamouli, Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, and the composer MM Keeravani, who was also nominated and won, all went to the event to represent RRR. RRR is a fictional story about two real people who fought for freedom in the 1930s and ran into each other while fighting against the British Empire.

RRR has enjoyed a fantastic run on the American awards scene. The movie had a mediocre theatrical run in the United States earlier this year, but when the Hindi version of the movie appeared on Netflix, it became a cult hit. It became a streaming success only by word of mouth, and as a result, it started to be discussed for year-end honours.
