Gouri Kishan receives empathy and support after she shuts down media questions body-shaming her

Tamil actor Gouri Kishan is in the news, for both right and unfortunate reasons. The actor, whose film Others, is releasing this week, left no crumbs when addressing Tamil media journalist who had addressed her weight and body-shamed. While Gouri taking a stand for herself was greatly appreciated by her industry peers, more of them voiced their support via social media.

Gouri Kishan’s standing for herself against body-shaming media

It all started when Gouri Kishan's Others co-star Aditya Madhavan was asked a question by a film journalist in Chennai during one of the press meets about Gouri's weight after seeing a scene from the film where he lifts her. While Gouri did not respond at that time, owing the need of time to process, the actor did address the issue during the film screening of Others. When the journalist defended the question, Gouri respectfully shut down his thoughts of body shaming her by asking her weight.
“How does my weight concern you in any way. How does it matter and be relevant to the film? My weight is my choice, and it does not concern my talent. I can only speak through my films and I am working hard. I have chosen characters that are career-oriented,” said Gouri Kishan, and did not feel okay about her team trying to silence the argument. “I have a perspective and everyone is silencing me here.”

Gouri Kishan receives support

Gouri Kishan taking a stand for herself, has been receiving well-deserving support from her industry peers. One of the early ones to support her include singer and voice artist Chinmayi Sripada. Someone known to be vocal about the discrimination women face in industry, Chinmayi wrote on X, “Gowri did an amazing job. The moment you call out a disrespectful and an unnecessary question - a whole lot of shouting down happens. So proud that someone so young stood her ground and pushed back. No male actor gets asked what his weight is. No idea why they asked a female actor.” Kavin also came in support and said, “Inside and out, you’re beautiful and inspiring, Gouri :) Always stay the same.”
