The upcoming Tamil film, Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (VTK), reunites the hit trio of Silambarasan, Gautham Menon, and AR Rahman, who previously collaborated on Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (2010) and Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (2016).
At the audio launch of the film at Pallavaram Vels University, Silambarasan's compelling speech drew whistles from his fans.
"Making movies is my job. I've been described as having an attitude, but now all I can think about is gratitude, and that's my new mantra." This, he said, in front of not only many of his fans, but also Kamal Haasan and AR Rahman, both of whom he described as special in his cinematic journey thus far.
Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu would be a unique offering, emphasised Silambarasan. "I needed to look like a 19-year-old for this film. There are many people from Tamil Nadu's villages who work far away from their homes and go through a lot. This film is in their honour, and is quite a journey in itself."
Based on a story by Tamil writer Jeyamohan, Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu will be a departure for Gautham Menon, who is known for his urban adventures.
"It was an interesting challenge," Gautham stated. "Jeyamohan was pleased that I had stepped outside of my comfort zone for this. VTK's production style and dialect were distinct. The love scenes were not in the original story, but they turned out well!"
Surprisingly, this was not the original project on which Gautham had embarked. He was working on a film called Nadhigalile Neeradum Sooriyan at the time when the idea for this current film came to him during a conversation with the writer.
"I had already completed three songs for that film with AR Rahman. I told him that I wouldn't waste any more of his time by using the same songs with different lyrics for this project. But Rahman provided us with a new set of songs for this one," Gautham noted.
Further, Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu will have a sequel, the makers had confirmed. The first instalment, billed as a gangster film, will focus on the character's origin story, with the sequel focusing on the character's rise within the underworld.
The technical crew for Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu includes cinematographer Siddhartha Nuni and editor Anthony. The female lead is Siddhi Idnani, and the supporting cast has Radikaa Sarathkumar, Siddique, Neeraj Madhav, and Aangelina Abraham.
Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu, produced by Vels Film International and distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Films, will hit the screens on September 15.
