Grey's Anatomy renewed for 19th season; Ellen Pompeo to return as Meredith Grey once again

Ellen Pompeo will once again be seen as Meredith Grey in Season 19 of Shonda Rhimes-created medical drama Grey's Anatomy at ABC. 

Original cast members Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr will also return to the new instalment. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the two actors had signed a multi-year deal in May last year to reprise their roles in one of the longest-running shows on TV so far.

Along with the actors, showrunner Krista Vernoff, who took over from Rhimes, will be back too. 

Grey’s Anatomy is a true phenomenon, beloved by audiences around the world. Whether they catch it live on ABC, or stream it on Hulu or globally on Disney+ or Star+, it’s clear that fans can’t get enough of Shonda Rhimes’ brilliant creation," said Dana Walden, chairman of entertainment at Walt Disney Television, in a statement.

She further said that the show will continue to focus on modern medicine and tell untold stories that are relevant in present times.

Pompeo, who is the protagonist of the series, has often expressed her desire to wrap the show. However, her remarks have usually followed when her contract is nearing an end. The Hollywood Reporter notes that there have been speculations about her salary being increased signficantly which makes her one of the highest-earning actresses seen on primetime TV.

The renewal comes on the hells of the show's production being stalled due to the rising cases of the Omicron variant in Southern California, according to Digital Spy.
