Crime anthology is an under-appreciated genre that has produced some riveting TV shows over the years, with fast-paced narratives and high octane storytelling. Therefore, for today’s list, here are the top six anthology based crime TV shows available to stream on OTT in India. I'm your host Nikhil, let's begin the list.

  1. True detective:

Nic Pizzolatto’s riveting TV series is one of the best anthology TV shows ever created. The crime drama has released three seasons so far, with each season focusing on separate tales of police detectives caught in the web of vast conspiracy. Directed by No Time to Die director Cary Joji Fukunaga, the series stands out with its compelling characters and engrosesing storytelling. The first season in particular, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, is widely regarded as one of the best seasons in any TV show ever created with its well paced narrative, engrossing screenplay, rich subtext, and excellent performances by the cast.

2. Fargo

The TV series created by the Coen brothers is an excellent crime anthology series set in different time periods in and around the snow covered regions of Fargo, North Dakota. Each season focuses on a particular crime or crimes committed by an individual or by gangsters. The series is also renowned for its excellent use of dark humour, which is in fact a signature style of the Coen brothers. Despite being the seasons narrating different tales set in different regions and different time-periods, the writers have carefully added a few plot lines and characters to establish that the events in the story belong to the same shared universe.

3. American Crime Story

This anthology series follows true crimes that have shaken the canvas of American history. With each installment focusing on a single event, American Crime Story chronicles high-profile murders and assassinations. Consecutive seasons have no links and each follow unique storylines. While the first season focused on the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, the second chose to shift focus on the murder of world-renowned designer Gianni Versace who was murdered by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. The series has in fact been nominated for a Golden Globe this year for Impeachment: American Crime Story, its narrative of the impeachment of former American President Bill Clinton, following the exposure of his scandal with Monica Lewinsky.

4.The Sinner

The Sinner is an anthology which unfolds in the way of a police procedural with the central character of Detective Harry Ambrose (played by Bill Pullman) uncovering unlikely murders and pinning down the criminals. Pullman’s character is the sole one that repeats in every season, with all other characters and storylines differing from one another. The anthology series won its share of acclaim with its first season being nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Actress (for Jessica Biel) and a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Pullman in 2019 for Best Actor.

5. Criminal: UK

This police procedural anthology series from creator George Kay revolves around a group of exceptionally skilled investigators who specialise in interrogating suspects. The show is set inside an interrogation room where the members of this unit engage in a myriad mind games with the accused to crack open cases. While the first season has three episodes of 45-odd minutes each, the second installment, which released on Netflix in September 2020, has four episodes. Each episode tackles a different set of suspects, and a different case. Kit Harington, Hayley Atwell, Kunal Nayyar, and David Tennant, among others, have made appearances on the show as suspects.

6. Castle Rock

Executive produced by JJ Abrams, this show has adapted Stephen King’s stories around the characters of the fictional town of Castle Rock in Maine. Starring André Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Lizzy Caplan, and Tim Robbins, the show was canceled after its second season run. If you are a fan of the Stephen King universe, Castle Rock provides you with ample thrills and themes surrounding darkness and horror.
