Manu Radhakrishnan, the director of the upcoming Malayalam film Gu, provided an overview of the fantasy horror drama in a candid conversation with OTTplay. Gu is scheduled to open in theatres on May 16. He stated that he would rather refer to the film as a psychological drama that follows the adult world through the eyes of children.

“We may have heard a lot of tales and beliefs from our parents about how to handle conflicts with family members or other relatives when we were young. For the most part, we do not comprehend. The movie examines these circumstances from the viewpoint of a child," he stated.

Devanandha-starrer Gu explores fear in all possible ways

According to the young director, the film revolves around a family vacationing at their ancestral home and the events that follow. Such visits to our family expose us to a variety of narratives and worldviews, both real and imagined. But during our formative years, these encounters have a significant impact on how our personalities develop," Manu continued.

He asserted that he made every effort to examine the feeling of fear in this movie. "Some of the elders who are haunted by the stories or the traumatic experiences they underwent when they were small are in fear as well, not just the children in this film," he said.

Manu mentioned that he had heard tales of mythical characters, particularly the ferocious god Gulikan. "The narrative draws inspiration from tales I have heard in Northern Kerala and from actual events recounted by two or three families I know directly," he went on.

‘Gu is made for theatre experience’

The film's director emphasised that, because of its fantastical elements, it is meant to be seen on a big screen for a truly unique cinematic experience. He also conveyed his excitement for the film's box office reception.

"Considering the favourable conditions that exist right now for Malayalam cinema, I have high hopes for Gu's reception from the public. Nowadays, each movie has its own place, and audiences are accepting of all kinds of genres," Manu pointed out.

He continued by saying that this movie will be remembered for its performances, particularly those of the young actors. Maniyanpilla Raju, Saiju Kurup, and Niranj Maniyanpilla all have important roles in Gu.
