Guitarist Angelo Bruschini’s better half Jessica Merritt took to Facebook on October 23, “I am very sad to announce that my beautiful husband, Angelo Bruschini, died on 23rd October 2023 at 12.15am. It was from a rare and aggressive cancer- pleomorphic carcinoma.” The born-in-Bristol artist was mourned by many fans and artists, as they resorted to social media and his music to lessen the blow.

The Massive Attack guitarist had posted on Facebook in July about his lung cancer: “Twice now I have been told ‘Good luck’ by specialists at the hospital over lung cancer, I think I’m f***ed!” Bruschini amicably ended the post on a bittersweet note, by saying that he had little regret as he had had a great life, full of wonderful people, and had seen the world in various ways. But he felt like the door was closing now, and he might as well write a book on his journey.

English trip-hop band Massive Attack had formed in 1987, however Bruschini had spent almost a decade performing with The Blue Aeroplanes, after his debut in the 1980s. Massive Attack and Bruschini first got together for collaboration while composing the band’s album Protection, in 1995. However, something had clicked between them, because a few months later, Massive Attack asked Bruschini to tour with them, and the rest is history. The band, along with Angelo, created hits like Teardrop and Risington, as part of the hit 1998 Mezzanine album.

Both The Blue Aeroplanes and Massive Attack penned stirring messages, dedicated to Angelo Bruschini on social media. The Blue Aeroplanes took to Facebook, “We are devastated to announce the passing of our brother Angelo Bruschini. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. Rest in Peace Ange x.”

Similarly, Massive Attack also shared a touching tribute on the Metaverse, “Devastated. How lucky we all were to share such a life together. Such a brilliant, eccentric talent. Impossible to quantify your contribution. RIP Angelo.”
