Guntur Kaaram on OTT has the worst Kannada dubbing in a while, say netizens

In the last few years, there’s been an increased focus on the quality of dubbing into Kannada, irrespective of whether the version makes it to theatres or not. Often, the lead actors themselves take the initiative to get it right, like, for instance, Ram Charan and NTR Jr for RRR, Siddharth for Chithha, Sai Pallavi for Gargi and so on and so forth. Even if the actors are not confident enough to handle it, production houses have also pushed for good voice-over talents to do the job, like, for instance, Vasishta N Simha for Prabhas in Salaar: Ceasefire, Pruthvi Ambaar for Shahid Kapoor in Farzi, Santhosh Shinde for Prabhas and Ravi Shankar for Saif Ali Khan in Adipurush, among others.

Even when Hindi, Tamil or Telugu films do not have a Kannada version in theatres, they often do so in time for the OTT release, as has been the case with Mahesh Babu’s Sankranti release, Guntur Kaaram. The Trivikram directorial, which paired Mahesh with Sreeleela, did not fare well at the box office and has already made its way to OTT. As of February 9, Guntur Kaaram began streaming on Netflix with a dubbed version in Kannada too. And therein lies the problem.

Netizens have been ripping apart the film for its poor dubbing quality. Audiences of the Kannada and Tamil versions have been taking to social media stating that Guntur Kaaram’s other language dubbing is the worst they’ve come across in a while. The writing is bad and so are the voice talents that have been used to get the job done.

Guntur Kaaram, meanwhile, had opened to mixed reviews, with Mahesh Babu said to be the only saving grace of the otherwise lacklustre film. The film’s below average box office performance is also why Guntur Kaaram is the first Mahesh Babu film to make its way to OTT within a month. The film also continues Sreeleela’s poor box office streak. None of the actress’ films in Telugu have worked well and she is now supposedly taking a break to focus on her studies.
