What's the plot of Guru Nanak Jahaz
The Punjabi drama centers on the journey of Komagata Maru which is a Japanese steamship chartered by businessman Gurdit Singh for Indian passengers. The passengers, who are mostly Sikhs, are sailing on the ship to immigrate to Canada to escape colonial rule. The voyage is intended to challenge the Canadians law that prevents Indian travellers to immigrate via single direct passage.
After arriving in Vancouver, the ship was prevented from docking, and most of the passengers were denied entry. For two months, the ship remained in the Vancouver harbor as lawyers and activists fought for the passengers' right to disembark. The film showcases the struggles of the ordinary people aboard the ship as they became symbols of resistance. The story is based on the real-life Komagata Maru incident from 1914.
Guru Nanak Jahaz also highlights the assassination of the British immigration inspector, William Hopkinson, who played the key role in the Komagata Maru tragedy. The movie shows the heroic act of Ghadar Party revolutionary Mewa Singh who assassinated William Hopkinson.
