Parambrata Chatterjee got hitched to his girlfriend, Piya Chakraborty, on Monday and the internet can’t keep calm. It became everybody’s business in approximately an hour and social media handles are still being flooded with judgements and snide remarks that reek of plain and unwarranted intrusion. Piya was married to Anupam Roy once and now that seems to be everybody’s problem.

All three people – two celebrities and a social worker – are now being valued on a ‘twisted’ moral scale. The judgements are currently ranging from ‘why Piya is marrying more than once’ to ‘should Parambrata marry his friend’s wife’ and ‘whether Anupam is sad and to what extent’. Hundreds of degrading and utterly disgusting memes have flooded the internet. Social media khaps have started to dissect their characters.

This is not the first time we are witnessing such a phase of ugly celebrity trolling. Only a few weeks ago, Deepika Padukone had been the victim for admitting that she had multiple affairs at some point in time. Our very own Srabanti Chatterjee is often being trolled for living her life on her own terms.

But where do these trolls come from and where do they go? The answer is simple and often talked about. It is our very own absolute lack of propriety that allows people to shamelessly invade others’ privacy.

Celebrity lives are often exposed to the public by virtue (or otherwise) of their profession. Most of our celebrities understand and accept that much of their private affairs often become headlines. What is alarming is how simplistically these people are objectified and humiliated. In fact, trolling is an abominable hypocrisy. Many of these faceless people who are currently questioning the justification of divorce and remarriage in this particular case could very well be divorced and remarried and there is nothing wrong with that. Hypothetically speaking, most of these people would hate to discuss their heartbreak stories in public. In fact, even the people who don’t mind washing their dirty linen in public have no right to do the same for others. This is invading others’ private lives and is only a regressive mindset that is driven by feudalism and patriarchal values.

Another problematic zone is objectification. Piya Chakraborty is a human being and a pretty successful woman by her own rights. It is obnoxious to see people treating her as if she was Anupam's property that changed hands. What makes people treat a woman like a piece of cake? Again, the answer is patriarchy.

A word of wisdom to dear trolls: this is high time and take a moment and hang our heads in shame. Maybe, we should unlearn many things and give love a chance!
