Alappuzha Gymkhana, one of three Malayalam Vishu releases is the clear box office winner, pipping films like Mammootty’s Bazooka and Basil Joseph’s Maranamass. The film, directed by Khalid Rahman of Anuraga Karikkin Vellam and Thallumaala fame, who was also seen as an actor in last year’s Manjummel Boys, is said to have made Rs 30 cr gross in its 9-day run so far.
According to trade trackers, Alappuzha Gymkhana’s lowest rest of India collection comes from the Andhra-Telangana belt, registering Rs 31 lakh gross only, vis-à-vis, Karnataka, where the Malayalam original has made Rs 2.2 cr. This is, however, likely to change, as a Telugu dubbed version of the film is set to hit theatres. On April 19, the makers announced that Alappuzha Gymkhana would release as Gymkhana on April 25. Given leading man Naslen’s post-Premalu popularity, Gymkhana is expected to garner footfalls in the region. Premalu had made Rs 10 crore in the Telugu version.
Written by Khalid Rahman and Sreeni Saseendran, Alappuzha Gymkhana is a sports comedy starring Naslen, Lukman Avaran (Saudi Vellakka), Ganapathi S Poduval (Manjummel Boys), Anagha Ravi, Franco Francis, Baby Jean, Shiva Hariharan, Shine Tom Chacko, among others. The film revolves around a bunch of boys who’d flunked their class 12 exams and hope to make do with grace marks obtained in the sports quota.
For this, they join a local boxing club to learn the sport and participate in the Kerala State Amateur Boxing Championship. Does Khalid present a classic underdog tale or is there more to the story? That’s what unfolds in the film.
Naslen’s lean and muscular frame for Alappuzha Gymkhana had become quite the talking point. The actor is expected to be a part of the Premalu sequel, with filming likely to start by June 2025. Directed Girish AD will return, as will heroine Mamitha Baiju.
