Even though Hansal Mehta's The Buckingham Murders started slow at the box office, the film has been receiving positive responses from the audiences. Kareena Kapoor Khan was praised both for her look and performance. Now, in a recent interview, Mehta talked about the actress’ conviction and shared his reaction to the film being compared with Kate Winslet’s Mare of Easttown.
In a conversation with DNA, Hansal Mehta opened up about Kareena Kapoor's raw look in The Buckingham Murders as he reacted to the actress' character comparison with Kate Winslet's Mare of Easstown. He said that there was no conversation on it.
"Mickey Contractor was doing her makeup and he is known to present women in the most beautiful avatars ever. The same Mickey said I am not going to do anything to her face. There will be no kaajal under her eyes and I will let the circles show. Kareena just embraced that. The conversation ended then and there," the filmmaker added.

Brushing off all comparisons, the filmmaker further added that people who find these very heavy parallels between the two are very reductive in their thinking.
"It’s a sign of mediocre and lazy thinking. These comparisons are done to cover up your laziness. You begin to sound very intelligent ki ‘maine yeh pakda’. But you have caught nothing," Mehta added.
He also shared that to create an authentic look for Kareena, the film crew sourced all costumes from local stores instead of going to designers.
“When we went for the look test, all the costumes were cheap readymade from local British stores. None of them were stitched for her,” said Hansal.
Additionally, the director said that the film’s story was written and narrated to him way back in 2018, a year before Mare of Easttown even went into production.
Meanwhile, in The Buckingham Murders, Kareena plays a cop who has lost her son. After the incident, she moved to a small town and investigated the death of a child.
