Actor Eddie Redmayne needs no introduction. He has displayed a wide range of acting career from a very young age. His accolades hold a candle to the fact, comprising of an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, a Tony, as well as two Laurence Olivier awards and two Screen Actor Guild awards. From playing a trans woman to a ruthless serial killer, Eddie Redmayne has done it all. If not my word, then these five films are sure to convince you.

The Theory of Everything (2014)

Directed by James Marsh, The Theory of Everything earned Redmayne an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award for best performance by a male actor. Not only was the film a box office success, but its portrayal of the life of world-famous astrophysicist Stephen Hawking is exceptional in its sensitivity and rawness. Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking does an amazing job depicting the latter’s unfaltering struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a debilitating motor neuron disease that will rob him of his ability to swallow and even breathe.

The film is available for rent on Prime Video and Apple TV.

The Danish Girl (2015)

Though the film has been criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of historical events, it not only earned several Oscar and BAFTA nominations but was also a box office hit. The film showed off Eddie Redmayne at his best, giving a powerhouse performance as a closeted trans woman who slowly comes out to society, and later becomes one of the earliest people to undergo a gender-affirming surgery. The Danish Girl is inspired by the lives of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, starring Redmayne and Alicia Vikander in the leading roles.

The film is available at Jio Cinema with a premium subscription and on Prime Video for rent.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Directed by David Yates, this fantasy spinoff based on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter serves as a prequel to the Potter-verse events, set in 1926. The film was a massive commercial success, grossing $814 million worldwide, despite being made on a $175-200 million budget. Its surreal depiction of mythical and magical creatures as well as a vintage Wizarding World was highly applauded, as was Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of an innocent, kind-natured, nervous genius, known as Newt Scamander, who is the film’s protagonist.

The film is available for rent on Prime Video and Apple TV, while it can be viewed on Jio Cinema with its premium subscription.

The Good Nurse (2022)

This chilling drama features Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne in the leading roles of Amy and Charles. Eddie Redmayne plays a cold and sinister serial killer who joins as a nurse at hospitals before disposing of random patients in his wards by administering a lethal dose of insulin and digoxin. This real-life character of Charles Cullen proves the acting range of Redmayne, who had shot the third installment as Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, in the same year as this film.

The film is available on Netflix.

My Week with Marilyn (2011)

This biographical drama stars the likes of Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Emma Watson, and Julia Ormond, along with Eddie Redmayne. The film depicts a week of 1957 from Marilyn Monroe’s life, when she was escorted around London by Colin Clark, an aspiring filmmaker, as her husband Arthur Miller had left for the States. This was during the shoot of The Prince and the Showgirl, which was directed by Laurence Olivier, whose role is essayed by Branagh here. A sweet, poignant film that offers a little insight into the troubled mind of Monroe as well as the touching bond she shared with Redmayne’s sincere and adoring Colin during his early days.

The film is available on Prime Video.
