Shah Rukh Khan, one of the most recognisable names from Bollywood, turns 56 today. He made his screen debut with Deewana in 1992, then took on several anti-hero and villainous roles — a brave move for a novice actor — and eventually cemented himself as the King of Romance in Hindi cinema. Khan has proven himself as an evergreen presence in Bollywood: a force to be reckoned with. So here's recalling some of his best and iconic dialogues that everyone from the Gen Z to your grandma will know.

"Bade bade desho main, aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain" - Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Khan was at his cheeky best as Raj who falls head over heels in love with Kajol's Simran after their meet cute in Switzerland. It's a dialogue so memorable that even former US President Obama quoted it in a speech.

"Pyaar dosti hai" - Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has its problems, and so does this dialogue. But if you take it out of the film's context it's a powerful one. Friendship is love, and love is friendship (and not necessarily the romantic kind). Khan plays the dreamy Rahul here, who sways everyone in class including Anjali (Kajol) with his observation of what love really means to him.

"Picture abhi baaki hai mere doston" - Om Shanti Om

Khan is one of the few actors who injects all emotion into the dialogue, and this one is just another example of it.

"Sattar minute, sattar min hai tumhare paas" - Chak De! India

I bet all of us walked out of theatres after watching Chak De! India wishing that we had a coach or a mentor like Kabir Khan. Out of all the moments in this inspirational sports drama, this intense scene is probably the first thing that pops up.

"Kabhi kabhi jeetne ke liye kuch haarna padta hai..." - Baazigar

This pithy one-liner from vintage Shah Rukh summed up the entire film.

"Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho..." - Om Shanti Om

Another Om Shanti Om dialogue made the cut here, and why shouldn't it?
