That the ball has started rolling rapidly on the Harry Potter TV series is a victory for the fandom that has been waiting for the show with bated breath. For months, curiosity has surrounded what’s happening behind the scenes, who is in contention for the roles, and what to expect. While Francesca Gardiner recently teased some details, no cast member was confirmed. After a long list of speculations, two massive names are now being associated with the show. Yesterday, we heard Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge is in contention to play Petunia Dursley, and now a new rumor links Cillian Murphy to the series.

Cillian Murphy in Harry Potter TV Series?

You heard that right. If the latest rumors are anything to go by, this is how the Harry Potter series is shaping up. Daniel Richtman, in his latest scoop, has shared that Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy is being eyed by Max to play a rather interesting character in the Harry Potter TV show. The makers reportedly want him to play a villain—Quirinus Quirrell—making for a very intriguing choice.

In case you don’t recall, Quirinus Quirrell was the main antagonist in the first Harry Potter book and movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. However, this is the only book and movie he appears in, and revealing why he doesn’t return in later installments would be a spoiler. Now, the makers want Murphy to step in and play this role.

ComicBook describes Quirrell as “a half-blood wizard and a former Ravenclaw, notably the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” This could be a perfect fit for Cillian Murphy, considering it’s a limited role that likely wouldn’t require him to commit to multiple seasons.

Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences worldwide, while the original, classic, and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally. The makers are planning for seven seasons, with two filmed back-to-back to avoid the aging issues of the young cast—similar to how James Cameron tackled Avatar 2 and 3.
