If there is one thing that Potterheads want to watch before this decade ends, it is the Harry Potter TV series that is in the making at Max as we speak. The studio has invested in making a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s works in a TV series, and they plan to trace the time when these characters were young. However, fans have been waiting to know more updates on the show, and there have been none about the filming, casting, or release. While the show aims for a 2026 release, Casey Bloys, along with the team behind the show, has now confirmed that filming begins in the summer of 2025 and that auditions for the lead parts are in full swing. The news was revealed at the Max 2025 Slate Presentation, where Bloys was joined by writer and showrunner Francesca Gardiner.
Sharing an update on the development at the event and later on Instagram, the makers of the Harry Potter TV series confirmed that the show will begin filming in the summer of 2025. With Francesca Gardiner stepping in as the leader of the project, the show is mounted on a massive budget. Director and executive producer Mark Mylod also confirmed that casting for all the roles, including Harry Potter, is still underway. As per THR, 32,000 children auditioned for all the young roles, with the producers watching every audition, viewing between 500 to 1,000 per day.
Talking about the process, Mark Mylod said, “We haven’t made any final choices, but we’re workshopping with a shortlist in January. And there are some crackers. The cream of British acting talent, this incredible tradition of brilliant theater actors, and of course, we’re following the books with canonical casting.”

Francesca Gardiner confirmed that the show will stick to the correct ages, including Professor Severus Snape, 31, and Lily and James Potter, 21. Addressing Snape, and how no one can replace Alan Rickman, Mylod noted, “Nobody can replace Alan Rickman, but we can find the next Alan Rickman.” Alan Rickman passed away in 2016. The buzz is that Paapa Essiedu is in the running to play the young Snape in the Harry Potter TV series. Gardiner also teased that fans should expect to see areas of Hogwarts that haven't been explored yet.
The Harry Potter TV series is being executive produced by J.K. Rowling via Brontë Film in collaboration with HBO and Warner Bros. The show will feature Francesca Gardiner as the showrunner and executive producer, with Mark Mylod as the director and executive producer.
The official synopsis for the series states: The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over twenty-five years.
Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally. The makers are planning for seven seasons of the show, with the first two filmed on very close schedules to avoid the same problem James Cameron faced with Avatar 2 and 3—the aging of the young cast.
