S.S. Rajamouli's RRR is nothing short of a phenomenon as it amassed fans from virtually all corners of the world. Aside from its massive commercial exploits both in India and overseas, the period epic became a bona fide pop-culture culture in regions like North America and Europe with the Oscars buzz duly following the film everywhere.
And now, all the ardent fans would be delighted to know that Rajamouli and screenwriter K.V. Vijayendra Prasad have confirmed that a sequel is in the works. The former, who is currently touring the United States of America to promote the film, addressed the questions concerning the potential sequel with an affirmative and said that the initial story discussions are on.
Taking the stage at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago amid tremendous fanfare, S.S. Rajamouli spoke about the cultural success of RRR and the fact that his father and story writer Vijayendra Prasad is currently working on a storyline for the much-anticipated RRR 2.
"Can't reveal many details about it (RRR 2) but my father, who is the story writer of all my films including RRR, and I have discussed a bit. He is working on the story," said Rajamouli as he drew a massive response from the crowd in front.
The final events of RRR saw Komaram Bheem and Alluri Seetharama Raju, the two characters essayed by Jr. NTR and Ram Charan respectively, fulfill their respective objectives by executing the tyrannical Governor Scott Buxton. While these concluding moments do not leave an open ending for the prospective sequel to take off from, one can expect the writing team to bring in a new conflict and raise the stakes for the central characters. Alia Bhatt made her Telugu debut with RRR as Sita.
Made on a budget of over Rs. 550 crores, RRR went on to gross close to Rs. 1200 crores worldwide and is currently placed at the fourth position on the list of highest-grossing Indian films. The film's theatrical run in Japan too is yielding extraordinary results and has already collected more than Rs. 11 crores since its release on October 21.
