Shekhar Suman is currently making headlines for his oral scene in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi. The actor was seen in the role of a customer who went to the leader of the tawaif, Mallikajaan (played by Manisha Koirala). He has been talking about the scene but recently, Shekhar also spoke about s*x workers and claimed that they keep the society safe by helping men channelize their animal instincts.

What did the actor say

Shekhar Suman was talking to Radio City, when he said that while no woman chooses the very profession, they help channelize the animal instincts in men. “Jahaan se hum aate hai, jis tareeka ki bhookh jo mardo mein hai, uska jo channelise wahaan hota hai uski wajah se samaajh bacha rehta hai,” he said. With that, the actor hinted that if the women did not exist, then the society would have many more and worse criminals.

Tawaifs and s*x workers are different, actor also explains

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has often tried to convey through his series Heeramandi that tawaifs are different from s*x workers. Shekhar Suman also elaborated that Heeramandi was a place where people, including nobles, went to learn skills like manners, art and music. Both kids and nawabs would learn the skills from the tawaifs. It was previously said that tawaifs were viewed as s*x workers because of Britisher’s agenda, but tawaifs were different and respected otherwise. It is to be noted that the women of Heeramandi aka the tawaifs played a significant role in the freedom movement and died for their country too.

On the viral scene

Shekhar Suman explained that the scene was supposed to be a normal sequence but the subtext of it was different. The scene was switched to it being mid-air. It could have turned out ridiculous, Shekhar was warned but he went ahead and gave the shot anyway. “I told him main bilkul karuga and we just went into it,” he recalled. The scene eventually became a talking point of the series.
