Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut web-show Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar emerged as the most-viewed Indian series on streaming giant Netflix in its first week. The web series, starring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Shaikh, was released on May 1, 2024. It boasts an ensemble cast also including names such as Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman. Heeramandi’s total run time is seven hours and 19 minutes. 

Heeramandi sees viewership drop in 2nd week

However, the show has now seen 11% viewership drop in its second week and now stands in second position for the second most-watched non-English series on Netflix. The show's views have now fallen down to 4 million from 4.5 million views. 

Since its release, Bhansali's show has been appreciated for its grandeur sets, beautiful costumes, performances by all the actors and its music. In just 12 days, the show had 8.5 million views and 62.3 million hours of views. In 32 countries, Heeramandi is trending in the top 10 list. These countries include India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Bahrain, Oman, Mauritius, Qatar, Kuwait, Maldives, among others. 

The show marks Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut into the digital space. Earlier, while speaking about Heeramandi, the filmmaker said, “Heeramandi has been a labour of love and I thank everyone who has worked on the show. I’m delighted to have collaborated with Netflix on my very first series and I am humbled by the love and appreciation we are receiving from the audiences in India and globally.” 

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar takes us to the pre-independence era with the timeline between 1920-1940. The show focusses on the lives of courtesans of the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore. It is set during the British Raj and focusses on freedom, fights, love, desire and also shows the rivalries between the courtesans. The show is currently streaming on Netflix.
