On August 15, 1947, India was freed from the clutches of the British, filling the citizens of the country with hope, joy, pride and happiness. Malayalam cinema has produced several films themed around patriotism over the years featuring powerful protagonists who wouldn’t mind sacrificing their lives for the nation.

People’s love towards patriotic movies is immense and they often mug up powerful dialogues in those movies and cherish them forever. Here are a few famous patriotic dialogues from Malayalam movies.

‘Sense, sensibility and sensitivity’ - The King

This film has one of the most popular and powerful dialogues about patriotism in Malayalam cinema. Mammootty starrer ‘The King’ is an evergreen political thriller in Malayalam, and the dialogues by the actor left everyone in awe. One particular dialogue, when Mammotty (playing an IAS officer) is in conversation with Vani Viswanath, is particularly memorable. The long narration about the greatness of India touches on the fact that the country’s diversity can’t be confined to history books and is rather visible across every nook and corner in the nation. The speech also has three words - sense, sensibility and sensitivity - remembered and recited by audiences across multiple generations.

‘That is patriotism’ - Kalaapani

Priyadarshan’s Kalaapani is an excellent patriotic movie in Malayalam, and there can’t be many better ambassadors of patriotism than Mohanlal’s Govardhan Menon. The movie is a potpourri of emotions with numerous dialogues that’ll strike a chord with the patriot in each of us. Govardhan, who is a prisoner in Kalaapani jail delivers powerful narrations on various occasions. In an iconic scene where he talks to a British doctor, Govardhan is seen talking animatedly about the divide and rule policy of the British and warns that the seeds of religious division will destroy the country. “But there will be a day,” he says, “every Indian will realise that India has only one religion that is patriotism. That day you will all bow your head with shame, the whole world will!” Need we say more about why the dialogue is relevant even today?

‘We will resist’ - Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja

The Mammootty starrer Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja is often hailed as the best historical drama in Malayalam, which narrates the story of Kerala Varma, the king of Pazhassi. The movie portrays the king’s courageous wars and resistance against the East India Company, though he is unable to withstand it finally.

The movie has dialogues reflecting the never-say-die spirit, bravery and willpower of the king. In a scene where the king is called for a meeting with British officers, he warns them by saying that they will resist their control in India till the last breath. “The company’s military is very strong, we know. But we will resist to the last to uphold our rights, dignity and freedom,” Mammootty’s character says.

‘Vande Mataram’ - Dada Sahib

Vinayan’s action drama Dada Sahib is about a freedom fighter Dada Sahib and his son Abubacker (both played by Mammootty). The movie focuses on corruption among government officials, superiors in a village. Even though there are many powerful dialogues, the climax scenes where Dada Sahib talks to the officials are a source of great inspiration. His emotional line ‘Vande Mataram’ delivered to his son moments before he dies, is something that would make any viewer emotional.

‘The bloody privileged Indian politician’ - Praja

Mohanlal starrer Praja is a political thriller that narrates the story of a gangster, who takes on corrupted politicians and enemies. The movie portrays the evil side of political figures in various scenes, and a particular scene in which Mohanlal’s character speaks emotionally to NF Varghese’s character, a minister, stands right up there among the best sequences about patriotism. He talks about how Mahatma Gandhi would react if he sees ‘the bloody privileged Indian politician’ corrupts the system now.
