New blood is preparing to make a name for itself in Bollywood. Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda are set to star in Zoya Akhtar's next film, an adaptation of the Archie comic book franchise. The project represents a paradigm shift in Hindi entertainment, as the three young actors have forgone a big-budget Bollywood debut in favour of a Netflix film.
According to reports in Mid Day, Akhtar began filming in Ooty last week. A source told the tabloid that Agastya joins them as Archie Andrews, and Suhana plays the popular Veronica Lodge alongside Khushi's Betty Cooper. Khushi will reportedly wear a fringe to imitate Betty's preppy style. The filming will take place in Ooty and the nearby locations for the next 40 days.
The source also said that for the project, the production has engaged local cast and staff, with just the major actors and core members of the team travelling in from Mumbai. The popular comic book series has been reinvented as a live-action musical by Akhtar. The team shot a key set-piece over the previous week.
Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Sharad Devarajan will co-produce the musical. In June, the unit is set to return to Mumbai to begin yet another extended schedule.
Earlier, in a statement, the Gully Boy director spoke about her upcoming directorial, saying she is ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring The Archies to life. It occupied a significant portion of her youth and adolescence. The filmmaker is a little concerned because the characters are iconic and well-known around the world. Akhtar needs to make sure the film evokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up with the comic while also speaking to today's young adults.
Archie Comics CEO and Publisher Jon Goldwater remarked that it's a major source of pride that the Archie Comics characters and storylines have resonated with fans around the world, especially in India, for more than 50 years. They are overjoyed to be working with Netflix and have full confidence in Zoya Akhtar and her creative team to offer a very unique and exciting take on Archie and his friends from the perspective of Indian cinema.
Goldwater knows these characters have global appeal, and adapting them to new settings and cultures is just the beginning of our multimedia adaptation plans.
