High IQ individuals team up with Homeland Security in this action series

Detective shows such as Elementary and The Mentalist had a good run, exceeding over a 100 episodes, and building a fan base that loves detective fiction. But Scorpion, which has largely been eclipsed by comparatively popular shows, has remained buried in the OTTverse. Loosely based on real life experiences of its producer Walter O’Brien who is also one of the protagonists in the show, this one gives a definitive twist to the typical consultant investigator sub-genre.

The story follows a team of high-IQ individuals comprising a human calculator, astute mechanic, a behaviorist and a hacker. Walter O’Brien, who is the leader of this band of misfits, has an IQ of 192 that surpasses Albert Einstein’s. But his high intellect is also laced with a crippling ego and a singularly low EQ. When this curious team of intellectuals are approached by Homeland Security to assist in high stakes cases, it ushers us into situations and circumstances that fold up in a manner that we can hardly predict.

High IQ individuals have forever headlined sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory where they’ve been depicted as standard nerds who struggle in navigating mundane social situations. But in Scorpion, the team of geniuses is tasked with complex problems such as rescuing those trapped in landslides to helping a nose-diving aircraft that has encountered mechanical failure.

Their creative and scientific approach to solving these problems makes this show worth a watch.

Elyes Gabel who plays Walter has previously starred in World War Z and was one of the Dothraki soldiers in Game of Thrones. Elyes is paired with American Idol winner Katharine Hope McPhee who plays his love interest. Eddie Kaye Thomas from the American Pie series joins Jadyn Wong and Ari Stidham in this show.

Scorpion delivers as a show that allows us to take in situations through the lens of its unique characters. While their approach in negotiating them may be singular, their problems are often relatable. Elyes Gabel carries the show on his capable shoulders even while the rest of the cast is largely unobjectionable. This can be a perfect show to binge watch. But if you have what it takes to run through all 4 seasons in a week, you may be left craving for more. This is because the show was canceled mid-cliffhanger after the 4th season as ratings plummeted. Too much of a good thing as they say…

Scorpion is available to stream on Amazon Prime.

Well that's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today, until the next time it's your host Nikhil signing out.
