Choreographer, director, and now vlogger Farah Khan is making headlines for various reasons, from judging Celebrity MasterChef to her weekly vlogs. However, she recently sparked controversy with a comment about Holi, which did not sit well with netizens. While she seemingly referred to those who engage in objectionable behavior during the festival, her remark was perceived as generalizing Holi, leading to heavy trolling and criticism. Now, Vikash Fhatak, aka Hindustani Bhau, has officially filed a complaint against Khan. Below are the details.
In a video from the sets of Celebrity MasterChef, Farah Khan comments, “Holi is the favorite festival of all the chhapri people.” The term Chhapri is considered a casteist slur, which has led to backlash. Complainant Hindustani Bhau believes her statement insults the religious sentiments of those who celebrate the festival.
According to TOI, an FIR has been filed against Farah Khan under Sections 19 6, 299, 302, and 353 of the Indian Penal Code. Vikash Fhatak's complaint states that using the term Chhapri to describe the sacred festival is offensive and derogatory. While neither party has publicly responded to the controversy, Hindustani Bhau’s advocate has spoken out.
Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh, representing Hindustani Bhau, stated, “My client asserts that this comment by Farah Khan has insulted the religious sentiments of Hindus. The use of the term ‘Chhapris’ to describe a sacred festival is highly inappropriate and could lead to communal tension.”
An excerpt from the complaint reads: “My client states that the accused has not only hurt my personal religious sentiments but has also disturbed the Hindu community at large. The incident involves Ms. Farah Khan, a prominent Bollywood filmmaker and choreographer, who recently made a highly derogatory and offensive remark against the Hindu festival of Holi. Through this complaint, I seek justice under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and request legal action against Khan for her irresponsible and inflammatory statements.”
