There's no denying that the unprecedented success of Kantara compelled actor & director Rishab Shetty to completely change his course of direction. By his admission, he did not see Kantara becoming the phenomenal box office hit that it eventually did, by virtue of which he became a household name across the country. Soon after, he began to attract offers from the most reputed production houses in India but it became apparent that he had another definite plan in mind.
Consequentially, Rishab Shetty would walk out of some of his other commitments and focus on what can now be termed the 'Kantara prequel'. This project, too, would be produced by Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films and the storyline of this prequel (tentatively titled Kantara 2, for our convenience) is expected to focus on the folklore that is part of the 2022 film.
Rishab Shetty, since the announcement was made by Hombale, has been busy touring the relevant locales and simultaneously developing Kantara 2. And on the grand occasion of Ugadi, he took to social media to gleefully announce that the scripting process has formally begun on the same day (March 22).
"Kantara writing begins," wrote Rishab in his tweet after wishing all his fans and followers a very happy Ugadi.
Aside from the fact that Kantara 2 would be a prequel, the entire team behind its making has gone to great lengths to keep the rest of the details under wraps. Rishab, too, has been evidently reluctant to discuss the film in public and has been silently toiling away on the side. He will most certainly return as the protagonist but with the narrative dealing with a different era in time altogether, it is likely that he will play a new character. New cast members, too, are slated to come on board.
