Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare was unique in the sense that it had no leading man. The film was led by a bunch of newcomers, with a few cameos by popular artistes thrown in for good measure. While the cameos helped, debutant Nithin Krishnamurthy’s film would have stood tall even without them. And that’s because the narrative was set in an all-boys college hostel, and focused on their life and how that is upended when the warden is found dead, allegedly having committed suicide. If his death was not bad enough, the warden had also left a note behind naming a few students responsible for his demise. How they deal with this dilemma forms the crux of the story.

The film was presented in theatres by Rakshit Shetty, who took an instant shine to it, as it reminded him of his engineering college days. Everything was going well for the team, what with all their innovative publicity campaigns working with audiences. But then, with only days to go for the theatrical release, the team ran into trouble when actress Ramya filed an injunction against the release. The team, she contended, had misrepresented the agreement about her role, and wanted the same removed. However, they were able to overcome this last-minute obstacle and bring the film to theatres on July 21.

This was a week in which two Hollywood biggies – Oppenheimer and Barbie – were releasing and Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare’s chances were thought to be slim, considering that no other film had managed to draw crowds to movie halls in the first six months of the year. But contrary to all of that, the film went on to become a roaring hit, with audiences loving the comedy-filled dialogues and that it evoked nostalgia about college and hostel life. The cinematography by Arvind Kashyap was also widely appreciated.

The film, which also released in a Telugu version, is now available to stream in its Kannada original version on Zee5 Kannada. You can catch the film on OTTplay Premium too |Subscribe Now
