The digital space is about entertainment from all sections of the filmmaking world. The genres, format, makers, and actors—everyone has an open sky and while every genre in the fiction world is having a great run on streaming, the world of true crime documentaries has kind of found its niche on Netflix. Over the past couple of years, we have seen the genre flourish on the streamer who has been experimenting with it the most amongst its competitors. The widely popular House Of Secrets gave us chilling nights post-release and the latest, Curry & Cyanide, was enough to shock us.

The studio is yet again taking us into the world of true crime documentaries with one of their most bold and anticipated projects, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth. The show will delve into the killing of Sheena Bora and the accused, Indrani, who allegedly killed Bora with the help of her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, second husband Peter Mukerjea, and driver Shyamvar Rai. Arrested in 2015, Indrani was given bail in May 2022. The docu-series is said to be Indrani Mukerjea telling the story and has been making headlines for a while.

So as The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth is a couple of days away from its official release on Netflix, we thought of introducing you to the genre on the platform and recommend five very interesting true crime documentaries on the streaming giant that you shouldn’t miss. Watch at your own risk. We don't think you should blame us for those sleepless nights later; you have been warned.

House Of Secrets: The Burari Deaths

Let's begin with the most mind-boggling of them all. A family of 11 people consisting of the elderly, youngsters, and children chooses to hang themselves together one fine day as a part of some ritual. Their neighbour the next morning finds all of them dead and hanging from their ceiling and a case unfolds. Leena Yadav and Anubhav Chopra created a three-part documentary for the streamer that explores the reason, the psych, and what exactly happened on the night and the days before in the Burari household.

Indian Predator: The Butcher Of Delhi

One has to be strong-hearted to even read and listen to the details of this heinous true crime story; forget watching it. A man targeted people in Delhi and killed them. It doesn’t end there; he dismembered their bodies and left their bodies all across the city and one of the spots was also Tihar Jail. This docu-series on Netflix is definitely not for the faint-hearted because the gore in the details is too tough to digest.

Curry & Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case

Director Christo Tomy gave Netflix one of the most popular true crime docu-series with Curry & Cyanide. Even if you haven’t seen the series or read about the entire case, you must have seen the widely popular memes that are right now all over the internet. But don’t underestimate the show by the memes. It is about the mysterious deaths of six people from the same family over the course of years and everything ends with one lady who is still alive. Investigations lead to a story that will shake you to the core.

Mumbai Mafia: Police vs The Underworld

The Indian film industry has already done enough research on the Mumbai Mafia, and Dawood Ibrahim is essentially the model for every stylized gangster in Bollywood. So when Netflix brought Mumbai Mafia: Police vs The Underworld, we were confused about what the show would exactly feature. But the streamer rather took a U-turn and made it into a search operation that was about the busting of the gangster nexus at the hands of Mumbai Police. The docu-series will leave you surprised as to what happened around us in the 1990s.

The Hunt For Veerappan

Veerappan has always been quite a fascinating figure in the world of crime. A man with such a story that one side looks at him as a criminal and the other as a hero, and that doesn’t take away the fact that he has committed some very heinous crimes. The documentary follows the thrilling life of the bandit, who has a history of crime from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. You should watch this docu-series to see what all this man made possible in the forest and how.

You can watch all five true crime documentaries on Netflix and The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth hits the streamer on February 23, 2024. For more content like this and everything else from the world of streaming and films, stay tuned to OTTplay.
