The series is based on George R. R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood.
Both the fantasy drama television series House of the Dragon and the television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) are based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. Martin and Ryan Condal developed the prequel series for HBO, which is based in part on Fire & Blood. House of the Dragon showrunners are Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.
The dramatisation of House Targaryen's beginning and end, as well as the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession known as the Dance of the Dragons, takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
