Onam is a week away, but the box office celebrations will start tomorrow with Mohanlal’s Hridayapoorvam and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, clashing at the cinemas. This is closely followed by Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira, headlined by Fahadh Faasil. It is the biggest box office clash in Malayalam this year, which will also see a fourth film, Maine Pyar Kiya, rubbing shoulders with the A-listers. Mohanlal, who has already seen two hits this year, is ahead in the game with the advance bookings, but the initial positive response also holds the key in determining the winner
Mohanlal’s Hridayapoorvam leads the Onam box office race in advance bookings with Rs 1.09 crore collected from 1172 shows in pre-sales, according to online trackers (data from the morning of August 27). The film hits theatres along with Lokah, which is lagging behind with Rs 51.38 lakh from 1030 shows.
The advance bookings of Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira opened much later and is yet to hit double digits in pre-sales. Maine Pyar Kiya, starring Hridhu Haroon and Preity Mukhundhan, is the fourth movie in the race, albeit without the star prowess of the other three.
However, one cannot judge the winner just based on advance bookings as much would depend on what feedback the films open to. Hridyapoorvam is indeed special as it marks the reunion of Sathyan Anthikad and Mohanlal after a decade. If the veteran filmmaker once again spins a feel-good tale with enough humour and heart, Hridyapoorvam could walk away with the title.

On the other hand, Lokah brings a woman superhero tale to our cinemas, the first of its kind in Malayalam. The novelty is appealing but needs good word-of-mouth publicity to draw in the traditional audiences to the theatres. Having the popular Naslen as the lead alongside Kalyani is a definite plus.
Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira is Fahadh’s big release after Aavesham last year, though he was seen in various roles in films across languages. Aavesham, a Vishu release, did not create much hype before its release but took off once the youngsters embraced the Rangannan vibe. We could see a repeat of that this year, if director Althaf Salim, along with Fahadh and Kalyani (second Onam release of 2025) impress audiences with the rom-com tale.
Maine Pyar Kiya has been creating the least hype. Starring Hridhu Haroon and Preity Mukhundhan, the film is touted to be a romantic thriller. But despite the low buzz, Maine Pyar Kiya could spring a surprise and one cannot completely write it off.
