The teaser of the second season of The Great, Hulu’s period comedy series is out. Starring Elle Fanning in the lead, the show starts streaming on November 19.

The second season will continue the story of the rise and rise of Catherine, played by Fanning. This time, while on one hand, she is gearing up for motherhood, on the other, she is sparring with Emperor Peter, her husband, for the throne of Russia. In a major plus for the new season, we catch a glimpse of the Golden Globe winner Gillian Anderson as Joanna, Catherine’s beautiful, patrician mother. The Great is a critically acclaimed, comedic, satirical drama chronicling the rise of Catherine. the Great throughout the 18th century in Russia, from being the non-member of the royal lineage to her rise as a female ruler with the longest reign in the history of Russia. Nicholas Hoult plays Emperor Peter.

The fresh season finally has her sitting pretty on the Russian throne. But the difficulty of executing the idea to overthrow her husband is a lot lower than liberating a country into Enlightenment, especially when the country isn’t wanting it. She is single-mindedly determined to bring Enlightenment to Russia, for which she locks horns with her court, her team, and her mother as well. Will the hateful relationship with her husband Peter soften as he turns into her ally or lover? Catherine will also realise many things en route to her journey as the ‘great’. There are a lot of learnings, the need to accept change from the country to change a country.

Phoebe Fox as Marial, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee as Grigor, Douglas Hodge, Charity Wakefield and Sacha Dhawan are also part of the cast. Tony McNamara, known for The Favourite, has written the Emmy nominated series and is also the executive producer of the same, along with Fanning and Marian Macgowan. Game of Thrones-fame Matt Shakman is directing the series.

The first season of the series earned three major Golden Globe nominations including Best Television series—Musical or Comedy, besides Best Actress and Best Actor for Fanning and Hoult. The book also got two Emmy nominations—for outstanding directing and outstanding writing.
