The first single from Darshan Thoogudeepa’s The Devil, Idre Nemdiyaag Irbek, and it is a complete fan service number that the actor’s ‘celebrities’ will lap up. The song, which was meant to have been out on Independence Day had to be postponed, when the actor’s bail was cancelled on August 14, was decided to be released in his absence, keeping in mind the financial difficulties yet another indefinite delay would cause the producers.

The Devil is Darshan’s first film since 2023’s Kaatera . The actor was shooting for the film directed by Prakash Veer, when in June 2024, he was arrested in connection with the death of a man, Renukaswamy, from Chitradurga.

Darshan has been named accused number 2 in the case on the basis that it was allegedly at his behest that Renukaswamy was lured to Bengaluru, where he was tortured to death. Renukaswamy’s fault was that he’d sent obscene messages to Darshan’s partner Pavitra Gowda, who is accused number 1, to not cause issues in the actor’s marriage with Vijayalakshmi.

The actor spent more than 4 months in jail before he got bail, and then took another couple of months before he resumed work, a delay that meant that the team’s initial plan of having the film in theatres in December 2024 did not happen. While Darshan completed the film recently, the cancellation of his bail by the Supreme Court came as a setback, which was initially thought would delay The Devil indefinitely yet again, until the trial in the Renukaswamy case is over.

However, the team has decided to go ahead with the release in the actor’s absence, with his complete support, with his wife Vijayalakshmi leading the promotions on his social media handles. The buzz is that The Devil will either be in theatres on October 31 in time for Rajyotsava, or later in December, perhaps closer to the Christmas holiday window. It was thought that the team would announce the release date with the song, but that was not to be.
