The first single from Challenging Star Darshan’s The Devil was meant to be out on Independence Day, but had to be pushed ahead when his bail was cancelled.

The cancellation of Challenging Star Darshan’s bail in the Renukaswamy murder case was an unexpected blow for the team of the actor’s next film, The Devil. They’d made elaborate plans for the release of the film’s first single, Idre Nemdiyaag Irbeku, which they wanted to follow up with the theatrical release date announcement. But when Darshan went back to jail on the eve of the song launch, it seemed that all their efforts were going down the drain.

Considering the financial strain yet another lengthy delay would cause the production team, Darshan has given them the go ahead to proceed with the original release plans and not wait endlessly for a time when he will be up for bail again. He’s entrusted his wife Vijayalakshmi with his social media handles to coordinate with team The Devil on the film’s release. As a first step, they’ve rescheduled the release date for the song, Idre Nemdiyaag Irbeku, which will now be out on Saregama Kannada on August 24 at 10.05 am.

The team is expected to reveal the theatrical release date then, as the buzz was that The Devil was aiming for a Rajyotsava or December theatrical outing. Darshan is said to have wrapped up talkie the shoot and dubbing of the film before his return to jail. Given that the next big-ticket release in Kannada is Kantara Chapter 1 on October 2, The Devil will be positioned sometime thereafter. The team’s plan will also determine when films like 45 and KD The Devil will release.
Darshan’s last film Kaatera was a December 2023 release and did well at the box office. The Devil was meant to be in theatres in December 2024, but his nearly 5 month incarceration put a spanner in the works. Kiccha Sudeep is also reportedly targeting a December outing for his next with Max maker Vijay Kartikeyaa, but that’s a distant likelihood, given that it is still in production.

Q. Why was Darshan arrested?
A. Darshan was arrested on June 11, 2024 in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. 35-year-old Renukaswamy was tortured to death for allegedly sending lewd messages to Darshan's alleged partner of many years, Pavitra Gowda and at his behest, the former was brought to Bengaluru, where he was beaten up and later succumbed to his injuries. Pavitra is accused number 1, while Darshan is accused number 2.

A. Darshan was granted interim medical bail in late November claiming he needed surgical intervention for a bad back issue. He was then granted regular bail by the High Court in mid-December, the circumstances of which have been questioned by the Supreme Court, which, on August 14, 2025, 8 months later, cancelled his bail.
