The 12-minute short film titled If Anything Happens I Love You was already a popular title among several vloggers, who had filmed their reactions after watching the moving film. With it now bagging the award for the Best Animated Short Film at the 93rd Academy Awards that was held on April 25, its fanbase is sure to expand.

If Anything Happens I Love You follows two grieving parents as they struggle to confront the death of their daughter, who was killed in a school shooting. It’s a poignant tale that is also relevant. The film deals with the aftermath of the killing in a victim’s family.

Already hailed as “an extraordinary piece of work” and “one of the best animated short films of the decade”, it raises awareness on gun violence and school shootings.

In an earlier interview with Variety, actress Laura Dern, who is one of the executive producers of the film, said, “The directors were able to capture the theme of grief in a way that transcended animation and film, which is so rare to experience.”

Earlier this year, the short film became the only Netflix feature to be shortlisted for the final category from the 96 qualifying animated shorts. The other movies in the category included Genius Loci, Opera and Yes-People.

If Anything Happens I Love You was also nominated in the Best Editor category for Peter Ettinger and Michael Babcock’s work.
