Carnatic musicians Ranjani-Gayatri had recently performed a concert in Chennai celebrating the glory of Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja. For the concert, the sisters, chose a few songs of Ilaiyaraaja that were closer to the Carnatic music genre and gave it their own creative touch at the event.
Ilaiyaraaja who was spellbound by the rendition of his own works, interpreted in a completely different way by Ranjani and Gayatri, took to his social media handle, to praise the work of the musicians.' 'Their rendition of some of my film compositions without compromising the classical sampradhaya left me spellbound and look back at my body of work in a different perspective… their success is success for good music !! @ranjanigayatri @OneMercuri," he wrote.
He also dropped a video on his social media page, in which he was all praise for the musicians. He said, "If I have to sum up the concert in short, I would say that I was not in this world for those two hours. It's amazing how Ranjani and Gayatri chose some of my songs and presented in a never-before-heard avatar at the concert. They were so thoroughly researched with a great understanding of the nuances of the song and it's really interesting how they improvised it using their own creativity. The result was sheer magic, it was unbelievable!."
He added, "I am someone who never looks back at his work. If I do that, I might feel sense of achievement. It prevents you from moving ahead. It makes you think, "Oh, have I achieved so much in life? It makes you feel proud of yourself. But the way Ranjani and Gayatri, presented my works to the audience yesterday, it made me look back at my work. "Oh, I could have done it this way, isn't it? Why didn't I tune the composition like that?" It made me think a lot. It was way beyond my expectations. They worked really hard on the concert."
Ilaiyaraaja said that he would often listen to the works of Carnatic musicians Ranjani-Gayatri on YouTube and found them extremely beautiful. "They are on top of the game as far as Carnatic music is concerned. It doesn't meant others aren't up to the mark. Ranjani-Gayatri have always been careful about presenting their renditions without compromising on anything and that makes them special."
