Imaginary is Blumhouse’s third film, following M3ghan and Five Nights at Freddy’s, that center around a form of child entertainment as the demonic or antagonistic element of the story. The film explores the psychological and paranormal roots that imaginary friends may develop when stuffed into a closet, or here, an attic.”
Produced by Jeff Wadlow and Jason Blum, the film is also helmed by the former, and stars DeWanda Wise as Jessica, Pyper Braun as Alice, Tom Payne as Max, Betty Buckley as Gloria, Veronica Falcón as Dr. Alana Soto, Taegen Burns as Taylor, and Matthew Sato as Liam.
The official synopsis by Blumhouse reads, “When Jessica Davis (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement.”
“Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.”
Set to be released on March 8, 2024, the film dropped its trailer on November 16, 2023. The eerie and unusual horror flick has been picked up by Lionsgate for distribution. The intriguing trailer shows a simple game Alice and Chauncey play, that slowly transcends innocence to touch base with self-mutilation and more.
It offers a sneak peek at the core question answered by the film about imaginary friends, “Are they really figments of childhood imagination or is something more terrifying lying just underneath?
