The Men in Blue have registered a famous victory over New Zealand in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 played at the Dubai International Stadium. Team India chased down the 252-run target with four wickets remaining in 49 overs. The action started with NZ skipper winning the toss and deciding to put runs on the board. The decision was further complemented by Kiwi opener Rachin Ravindra (37), who took the attack to the Indian pacers during the powerplay. Rohit Sharma soon introduced Varun Chakravarty and Kuldeep Yadav, which helped Team India get rid of the NZ top order.
The middle phase of the New Zealand innings was dominated by the Indian spin attack comprising Axar, Varun, Kulpdeep, and Jadeja. They all bowled tighter lines and gave no easy offerings to the Kiwi batters. New Zealand managed to get past 250 runs, thanks to the half-centuries by Dary Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53). Kuldeep and Varun emerged to be the standout bowlers for India with two wickets each.
Team India, while chasing the target of 252 runs, was off to a great start. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma came out with an attacking mindset and scored quick runs against the Kiwi pacers. He, along with Shubman Gill, had a 105-run opening stand for the first wicket in 18.4 overs. However, India's solid start was halted by NZ picking three quick wickets of Gill (31), Kohli (1), and Rohit (76). At that moment, India was 122/3 in 26 overs with NZ right back in the game.
Moving ahead, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel took charge of the Indian innings and added 59 runs together for the fourth wicket. In the end, it was KL Rahul (34) and Ravindra Jadeja (9) who took India over the line and won the Champions Trophy title with four wickets in 49 overs. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was awarded Man of the Match for his expectional 76 run innings.
