Eminent Indian classical musician Pt Vijay Kumar Kichlu breathed his last on Friday evening in a South Kolkata hospital. He was 93. He was suffering from age-related complications. He was the recipient of Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi, and many other laurels. He played a pivotal role in establishing Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. 

Pt Vijay Kichlu was rushed into hospital after he suffered from breathing difficulties. Despite the effort of the doctors, he passed away. He was born in 1930 in Almora, Uttarakhand. He started his musical journey when he was a toddler. Nathuram Sharma was his first teacher. Later, he started his training with Mainuddin Dagar and Alimuddin Dagar. He came to Kolkata in 1955 after the History-graduate musician got a job in a British Shipping company. He embraced the City of Joy and this place became everything. He became friendly with Bengali musicians. He developed the Sangeet Research Academy and became the executive director of the place. 

Vijay Kichlu’s musical journey ran for 80 long years. Several dignitaries across the country offered their condolences to his family. 

Pt Vijay Kichlu’s family informed us that on Sunday, his body will be kept at Rabindra Sadan from noon onwards. His students and fans will gather there to offer their tribute. His son Rohit Kichlu said. “My father was a worshiper of music. He gave all his life to music.”
