James Mangold's action-adventure Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, starring Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas and others, is set to make its OTT debut on December 1, 2023, on Disney+ Hotstar.

The fifth and final instalment of the glorious Indiana Jones film series arrived in cinemas earlier this year in June amid tremendous fanfare. With Harrison Ford wielding the whip as the titular character for one last time, 'The Dial of Destiny's theatrical release carried a lot of sentimental value not just for the makers and Ford himself, but also for the global fans of the franchise. The latest instalment also saw James Mangold stepping in for the film series' original maker Steven Spielberg, who has directed all the previous four instalments.

The story of Indiana Jones 5

Dial of Destiny serves as the direct sequel to the 2008 film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and concludes the globetrotting saga. Indiana Jones, or Indy, must embark on a race-against-time mission to repossess a dial built by ancient mathematician Archimedes which, we learn, allows for time travel to a possibility. With his goddaughter Helena Shaw (Waller-Bridge) by his side, the daredevil archaeologist must ensure that the dial does not fall into the hands of Jürgen Voller (Mikkelsen), a former Nazi who intends to use its potency to alter the outcome of World War II.

David Koepp, who also wrote Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is credited as one of the four screenwriters of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny along with James Mangold, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. Some of the other recurring characters including Indiana Jones, of course, are based on those created by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman.

How did critics respond to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny?

As much as the film found itself surrounded by hype and excitement prior to its release, it may not be incorrect to say the eventual verdict wasn't as flattering as expected. Harrison Ford's performance, imbued with his trademark charisma and wit, was noted as one of the positives along with Mangold's staging and use of camera, but many critics noted that Dial of Destiny did not evoke the same joy and thrills that the rest of the franchise did. A few other critics also felt that the over-reliance on nostalgia caused problems of its own to the narrative.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 before releasing in theatres on June 30. The mixed reviews did cause a dent in the film's box office collections as it ended its theatrical run around $380 million against a whopping budget of close to $300 million. Dial of Destiny is the fourth highest-grossing film of the Indiana Jones franchise after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Amrish Puri starrer 'Temple of Doom' is the lowest-growing film of the series.
