Interstellar Re-release Box Office Day 3: Who could have thought that the country would be religiously tracking the box office performances of re-released movies on the big screen? Well, the unimaginable has happened, and we are now busy looking at re-releases performing much better than fresh movies in theatres. These are the times we will talk about in the future. While Sanam Teri Kasam is busy rewriting history with its run, another movie that has managed to pull in a massive audience for its re-release is Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. As it ends its first weekend since re-release, the update is that the movie is now a ₹50 crore strong film in the Indian market when added to the collection of its original release.
You read that right. As per the numbers flowing in from Sacnilk, Interstellar, even with many other films by its side, has firmly held its ground and is the second-best performer of the week. The Matthew McConaughey starrer on Sunday managed to bring in ₹3.25+ crore at the domestic box office, which takes the collection of the movie to ₹9 crore gross. It had earned ₹2.40 crore net on the first day and followed it up with over ₹3.25 crore net on Saturday.
This means the Christopher Nolan movie has managed to cross a milestone in the country. When the movie was originally released in 2014, it had earned ₹41 crore gross in the country. This means that if we add the re-release collection, the movie has now touched the ₹50 crore gross milestone in India. This is indeed an interesting feat for the film.
Interstellar has made a mark in the re-release trend, performing beyond what other top re-releases did in India. Recently, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani made waves with its re-release, earning ₹1.15 crore net on opening day, but Interstellar has surpassed that number. Another strong performer, Tumbbad, earned ₹1.50 crore on its opening day. However, the Christopher Nolan film debuted with ₹2.50 crore on its first day of re-release, leaving both behind.
Now, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is competing with James Cameron's Titanic, which had the best re-release run at the Indian box office. The Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet drama earned ₹20.5 crore in its lifetime re-release in India. If Interstellar maintains its momentum, it could surpass this record. The Nolan epic originally earned ₹38 crore in India upon its 2014 release. It will be interesting to see what magic the film manages in its second run, as it was one of the most anticipated re-releases of all time in the country, and the response so far has been very strong.
