No other sporting event in India comes close to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The playoffs are underway today and the Royal Challengers Bangalore go head to head with Lucknow Super Giants on May 25 in the first eliminator of the season.
The franchise from Lucknow, who are in their first IPL season, finished third in the table after the group stages with 18 points while Royal Challengers Bangalore finished behind them in fourth with 16 points, edging past Delhi Capitals, who failed to qualify in heartbreaking fashion.
KL Rahul led Lucknow Super Giants have impressed in their first season, with the captain and fellow South African opener Quinton De Kock in the second and third spot respectively in the battle for the orange cap. Their last game was a flyaway victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders, who put up 208 on the board. The Lucknow side chased the score down without losing their openers, with De Kock scoring a mammoth 140 not out in 70 balls.
The team will look to play their strongest side against Bangalore in the first eliminator, which will feature the likes of Deepak Hooda, Avesh Khan, Marcus Stoinis and Evin Lewis.
Royal Challengers Bangalore on the other hand, had to let go of a few of their players for this year’s auction, including Yuzvendra Chahal, who currently holds the purple cap. With Virat Kohli stepping down as the captain, South African opener Faf du Plessis has been the skipper this season. The South African has had a good first season, and is in the fifth spot in the orange cap race. Bangalore has not had the best of seasons, but managed to make it to the playoffs with their fate in the hands of Mumbai Indians, who have had a lackluster IPL season.
RCB will also go with their best side, which includes Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who is second in the purple cap race, with two scalps less than Chahal. His spin bowling could become a game changer at Eden Gardens, where the match will take place. Virat Kohli has had a poor season. A lot will depend on how the former captain could hold up against the bowling attack of the Lucknow Super Giants. Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Hazlewood and Dinesh Karthik are also expected to start the game for the team from Bangalore.
RCB got the better of LSG the last time the two teams met, but that does not mean anything going into the first eliminator. The winners of the game will have to face the losers of the first qualifier later in the playoffs.
Fans across the country can tune into the game, which is available on OTT, through their devices. LSG VS RCB in the first eliminator will be streaming live on Disney+ Hotstar on May 25, with the game starting at 7:30 PM IST.
