A few weeks ago, during the promotions of Tharun Moorthy’s film with Mohanlal, Thudarum, the buzz was that his next directorial venture had already been fixed. Operation Java maker Tharun was, according to reports, set to collaborate with Rekhachitram fame Asif Ali, the actor who has been having a dream run at the Kerala box office, with consecutive successful films. This was supposedly based on a story by actor Binu Pappu, who is a regular Tharun collaborator, in front of and behind the camera.

But then, days after the release of Thudarum, which is still raking in the moolah at the box office, Tharun’s next was officially announced, but it was not what had been reported earlier. The Saudi Vellakka maker had roped in Premalu star Naslen and Fahadh Faasil for a film called Torpedo, which, in all likelihood is the script that was supposedly meant for Asif.

So, is an Asif Ali film with Tharun still on the cards? “I was in discussion with Tharun for a collaboration and that is an ongoing process. I am not a part of Tharun’s next film, but a collaboration between us is something that both of us are keen to make happen. So, it’s still a possibility,” is all that Asif was willing to spill when asked by RJ Rafi on Star Jam.

Asif is currently in the midst of promoting his film Sarkeet, while Tharun is basking in the success of Thurdarum, which, as of May 13 recorded Rs 100 crore from the Kerala box office and more than twice that with the world-wide collections. Asif is currently working on a film called Tiki Taka with Adventures of Omanakuttan and Ibilis maker Rohith VS, for which he’s undergoing a body transformation.

Tiki Taka, he had said, is his first step in the journey to doing larger-than-life, heroic roles, which had been missing in his filmography, given that Asif has a boy-next-door image among Malayali audiences.
