Rohena Gera’s film, Is Love Enough? - Sir, is a hidden cinematic gem that brings a poignant tale of longing and forbidden love against social and class differences. Starring Tillotama Shome and Vivek Gomber in lead roles, the plot revolves around a privileged US returnee (Vivek) Ashwin, and his housemaid, Ratna (Tillotama). When Ashwin’s marriage is called off suddenly due to his fiancée's infidelity, he returns to his Mumbai apartment, and so does his housekeeper Ratna, who carries out the chores. What begins as mutual respect and bonding slowly transitions from friendship to forbidden love.

Despite the social differences, both Ratna and Ashwin navigate their relationships and careers in this cinematic masterpiece.

What happens to Ashwin and Ratna’s relationship in the ending?

When Ashwin proposes to Ratna and asks for a relationship with respect and love, the latter calmly refuses his romantic proposal, reflecting on their evident social and class differences. While she could sense the judging eyes on her after accepting Ashwin’s love, it is truly the opposite for Ashwin, who is ready to break every barrier for her and even suggests that she move abroad.

Despite their heartfelt separation, viewers can sense that she has some unspoken feelings for Ashwin as she communicates with her eyes rather than her actions. When Ratna learns that Ashwin got her the internship job through his reference to support her dream of becoming a fashion designer, Ratna rushes to thank him, but only finds a locked apartment with the news that he left for the airport to return to the States.

In the post-credits scene, we witness the nervous Ratna calling Ashwin over the phone and addressing him in an informal way, as he always wanted to hear. As she says "Hello, Ashwin” with a slight smile and glimmering eyes, there are hopes of their little future. The movie concludes with an open ending and leaves the viewers to imagine a happy ending for the star-crossed couple.

How Ratna’s “sir” gesture brings an unconventional ending

In the beginning, we witness how the housemaid Ratna used to do all the chores for Ashwin, not because it was her job but also because she understood him as a human being with complex emotions. She addressed him sir throughout the movie, maintaining the social barrier of high and low status. The camera pans beautifully from Ashwin’s lavish bedroom to Ratna’s small servant quarters, yet they have something in common: a vulnerability of companionship. Despite Ashwin’s multiple requests to not call him sir but rather by his name, Ratna held her fort. In the last scene, Ratna finally drops the sir, breaking the shackles of society to finally accept her happiness over other social constraints. This marks an unconventional ending for both Ratna and Ashwin.

Ashwin and Ratna defy the odds of class and society

Any cinematic offering mirrors society, and I believe that a good movie influences the minds of millions of viewers as they delve into the skins of the characters and imagine their lives. In the movie, Is Love Enough? - Sir, we traverse through different phases of love and acceptance. When Ashwin breaks off his marriage due to infidelity, he is seen as a broken and lonely person, grappling with his dreams of becoming a writer. Despite their differences, Ratna and Ashwin are kind of similar in terms of loneliness, seeking companionship, and working for their aspirations and dreams. Ratna inspires Ashwin by narrating her story, including how she became a widow at a young age but still “life goes on” and how she wishes to not choose the same fate for her sister.

Ashwin, on the other hand, showcases a character who is kind, humble, and respectful to everyone despite any social or class differences. Every time Ratna helped him with a chore, he would say “Thank you,” though a small gesture, it has a positive impact on the listener. He also never mocked Ratna’s dream to become a fashion designer, despite her illiteracy.
